Coerver Select

Coerver Select is a new U-13 and U-14 Coerver Coaching Program for graduates of the Coerver Center of Excellence and other talented players. 

Minnesota soccer has challenges.  Many players, clubs, and organizations such as Coerver Coaching do a great job in preparing players up to about 12 years of age.  However, after this age, coaching seems to veer away from creative skill development and move heavily into tactical and functional play. More games, scrimmages and tournaments seem to dominate the landscape after U-12 play. This trend has diminished the number of players who are highly skilled and play a creative, unpredictable style of soccer that can unlock a tough defense.  Many of our players are not that much more skilled at 16 as they were when they were 12-13.  Coerver Coaching hopes to bridge that gap with the Coerver Select Program.

It will build on the skills and concepts developed over the past 4 years in the COE but expand and extend the skill set and the speed at which they are performed.  Tactical aspects of play will not be ignored but will utilize the newly developed skills and provide a context in which the skills can be used.  For example, the concept of ‘checking away and checking to’ can be combined with more advanced techniques for receiving and turning under pressure.  Players will be expected to perform most of the skills learned in the COE under full pressure situations.

At present, we plan on having four centers for the Coerver Select program:  The Tonkadome (U-13 West), The 10Dome in Long Lake (U-14 West), The NSC (U-13/14 North), and The St. Croix Dome(U-13/14 East).  The Coerver Select Program will be coached by Simon Whitehead, Carl Craig, Latcho Kostadinov, Phil Walzcak and other senior Coerver Trainers.  Guest Coaches will also be brought in - for example Ian Barker and some NSC Minnesota Stars Players.  Players who graduated from the COE are automatically accepted into the Coerver Select Program.  Others will need to be evaluated.  Initially, this will be a U-13 Program.  It has been expanded this year to include U-14’s and in years to come it will include older ages groups.  Currently, U-15, U-16 and U-17 players can sign up for the advanced groups of the Regular Coerver classes. 

The cost of the 18 week program is $400.  Players will wear a distinct ‘Coerver Select Uniform’ in Green and Yellow.  The socks will also be yellow, unlike the picture.  These are custom made uniforms and will be ordered by Coerver Minnesota before the program begins.  Each participant must fill in an order form with the size required and pay the cost for the adidas uniform which is $75.  The order form for the Coerver Uniform is on the downloadable forms.  The form is also linked here.
